icarus of woodbridge, virginia by ~yourotherleft:iconyourotherleft:

“I cannot die,” he said, and
that was all I knew of him.

It was October then, so I
pinned the last firefly to his sweater
and told him the fever would break.
“It will not,” he said. We kept
that secret just between us and
never breathed a word.

One morning I crept home
and painted pictures for an hour
before he flew silently into
my room. “Your prison looks
just like mine,” he said. That day
we made too many promises
to count on our twenty freckled fingers
and crushed each one with the same
four hands. The black dove tattooed
on his wrist just grinned at me, with
thick feathers on fragile skin
and perfect wings not made to fly.
He escaped with a wordless smile and
a disclaimer that he simply could not
wrap his mind around the failing heat.

Three weeks later I stayed up
until dawn with that sickness.
As the sun rose softly into November
I swear I saw him stretch his wings
and speed blindly into the light.
“I told you I couldn’t die,” he said and
I watched him slam into
the freezing ground.
I never asked where he landed.

i'd like to hear the story behind this, if there is one.

there always is one. I think that's what I like most about your writing, the branches that grow from each line.

i'd also like to know why you've been frustrated, it seems so at least, i don't want to assume anything, but i guess that's another story too.

love, :calvin:

"maybe you'll be president and know right from wrong,
or in the flood you'll build an ark and sail us to the moon"

want to know something- I cried. Don't know why, but your words struck me.
There has never been a ppoet on this site, or anywhere, really, excepting TS Eliot, that has really hit me this hard.
want to know something? I think you're phenomenal

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of poetry I have read in a long time. The story just drew me in. I absolutely loved the ending.

I pick up the tiny details and usually there's something I'd change in everything including my own work but I couldn't find a single flaw in this poem. This is about as near to perfection as you can get. :+fav:

If this piece is any indication on the quality of the rest of your work you must be a very talented writer. As soon as I have the time I'm going to have a look through some more of your work. Well done on this piece.
